In a smashing Olympic debut, Laishram Devendro Singh of India knocked out his opponent Bayron Molina Figueroa of Honduras in just two minutes and 24 seconds in men’s light flyweight category thereby sailing into the pre-quarterfinals here in London. Seeing his aggressive match-winning performance, India is pinning its hope for its second medal from the 20-year-old dynamite from Manipur.
As the news of Devendro beating his opponent broke, media went gaga over this little known Indian boxer. Not only the media, but rest of the world was surprised by his adrenaline-rush performance. The world of social media like facebook, twitter etc. was full of praise for this talented young boxer.
Congratulating the pugilist on his maiden win in Olympic, facebookers went overboard in praising this lesser known Indian boxer. “Best wishes for your upcoming bouts. We, Indian, are proud of you. Best of luck. Do it!” congratulated JS Chauhan, an active facebooker.
In an interview, when asked what his plans are for the London Olympics, Devendro said: “I am a new entrant in the senior boxing category. So my opponents do not have any idea about my bouts. But I know everything about my opponents through their bouts’ videos. So, watching their matches’ videos thoroughly is my plan. And debuting in the senior category is my biggest advantage as they don’t have much knowledge about my style.”
Surely, this rising star from Manipur is full of promises. Hope he lives up to it and wins a maiden Olympic medal to make his country proud.
