Are you an NE or a Muslim

by Mehnaz on Friday, 17 August 2012

He asked me the question above. That led me to seriously think over. Hence, writing this (yes, again I am writing on Identity crisis! Uffff!! ).
I am a Northeastern  and a Muslim too. All these unfortunate days of violence, I never thought in the perspective of being a Muslim nor being a Northeastern but as a Layman who wants peace all over.

Waking up in the morning and seeing the newspapers, facebook, twitter et al full of the ongoing agitation is definitely not my cup of morning tea.  It pains to see how my fellow NE folks in panic due to some miscreants attacking them in some states. You never know, when the attacks and killings can happen where I am staying right now. It’s not about being a Muslim or a Northeastern, it’s about being a Human not a wild beast.
He asked, “Muslims are against NE. But what would they say about you?”

“Nice question,” I said.
(Well, I couldn’t believe this was coming from him with whom I have been friends since childhood! Yes, for some 20-odd years.) Anyway, coming back to the conversation, he joked:

“I’ll kill you if anything goes wrong!”

Shocked at his expression, I replied very calmly, “If not by you, I could be killed or attacked by them as I am too from NE. Remember, they aren’t asking names before killing or attacking.”

I further added, “You know what, rioters or terrorists aren’t Muslims or Hindus or Christians. In simple words, they are NOT human but animals who want violence to disturb the long standing peace among the communities. I am as sad as you are right now .”

On my killing part, I quipped, “ If you think you should kill me of I being a Muslim from NE because Muslims are killing my fellow NEsterns in other places, then you can go ahead and do the honour. However, this would only lead to hatred amongst one other, you should keep it mind. Well, peace is the solution, not violence.”

He concluded, "Calm down buddy. I was just kidding!"

On a general note, I would like to appeal to everyone that let’s go towards peace and not violence, let’s not believe in rumours and check on facts, let’s conquer violence with peace, let’s stand in unison. As Mahatma Gandhi said. “An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.”
