In a thrilling race to the White House, Barack Obama has won re-election to a second term as President of the USA. Obama defeated his rival Republican Mitt Romney with close victories in battleground states.
President thanked the people for re-electing him just after the victory. “Four more years have happened because of you. Thank you”, Obama tweeted.
Obama won 275 electoral votes while Mitt Romney won 201. President Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney in a series of key swing states despite a weak economic recovery and persistent high unemployment as U.S. voters decided between two highly different visions for the country and its people.
By 11 p.m. of US time, Obama had already won the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Iowa and Wisconsin, the home of Romney’s running mate Rep. Paul Ryan. Also, Democrats held onto their majority in the Senate.
