An angry young woman from a small village in Manipur fights her way to the world stage winning several prestigious titles and awards is the storyline of the much-awaited biopic #MaryKom. Starring one of the most talented actors in the industry #PriyankaChopra, the movie did capture the audience's imagination to a quite extent. With her powerpacked performance, Priyanka Chopra did justice in her role to portray all the struggles that Mary Kom has faced in reality to reach the stage where she is now.
The other cast of the movie supported PC effectively. Special mention can be made for the actors who played the role of her coach and her husband. The movie portrayed the real struggle of a Manipuri against all the odds. For instance, her altercation with her father who opposed her joining boxing, facing discrimination because of being a Manipuri, her fightback after being a mother, among others. Despite all of these, she came out as a winner.
Debutant director Omung Kumar tried his best to depict the status quo in Manipur although the movie was not shot in Mary's home state. For instance, there is this scene depicting curfew being imposed, the regular shootout between the militants and the armed forces, poverty, to mention a few. The Director also included few Manipuri words in the dialogue apart from the already famous Manipuri cum hindi song 'Chaoro Echa Paari' so as to keep the essence of Manipur. This proved the director and his team have done a good research on the issues of the state and its star Mary Kom. One can see a touch of renowned director Sanjay Leela Bhansali too as he is the creative director of the movie.
Talking about the technical aspect, the script is an awesome one as it's based on the magnificient Mary Kom's life. However, there are some glitches in the screenplay and also the direction. The needed energy to propel engagement of the audience lacked in few scenes, like in her first bout win, the director did not lead the audience to enjoy that moment longer as it got a sudden cut and got transition to the next scene immediately. And this thing happened quite often in the movie. The first half of the movie is a bit slow, however, it picked up its pace in the second half. Cinematography was just amazing as it successfully depicted a lookalike of the scenic Manipur. Editing was a bit of concern since the scenes that needed to be cut were dragged and the ones that needed to be extended got a cut. However, it was climax of the movie, that led the audience to feel goosebumps with Priyanka Chopra depicting exceptional energy and the correct facial expressions thereby winning each and everyone's hearts.
Well, the first day first show audience have to say these on the movie:
"Priyanka Chopra is so spontaneous. And she is the perfect choice for the movie despite of her non-oriental look. She has proved her mettle that she can do any kind of role, be it a romantic or an action flick. The hard work she has done is so visible in the movie. I like the way she uses her left hand to punch hard her opponents. But if I have to choose one scene, then it has to be the last scene. It just touched my heart," said Lucinda.
"I am so proud of being able to watch this movie of a living legendary. It will for sure encourage the young boxing aspirants. However, I think it could have been better in few scenes. Any which way, Priyanka did a mindblowing job," Rayar quipped.
All in all, it cannot be denied that the movie has won the hearts of many, however, there are some loopholes in it for Mary Kom movie to be called as the perfect biopic. Nevertheless, the standing ovation it got in the end of the movie, be it for any reason, speaks a lot for itself. Well, you might not like it, but you can't ignore it.
