Cartoonist Aseem Trivedi has been arrested for allegedly posting seditious content on his web portal during the Anna Hazare movement last year in Mumbai.
Kanpur-based cartoonist Trivedi posted obscene cartoons that allegedly showed Parliament as a commode and the national emblem with wolves instead of lions.
Mumbai police arrested him on Saturday and produced before a Mumbai court that sent him to police custody till September 16.
His arrest has led to the outrage among the people saying that it’s an insult to democracy and freedom of expression of the Indian Constitution. Gaurav, an activist, says, “Arresting a person for simply protesting the country’s present scenario in the form of cartoon is seriously an insult to the Indian democracy.”
Justice Markandey Katju also issued a statement in favour of Aseem Trivedi, saying, "My opinion is that the cartoonist did nothing illegal. In a democracy many things are said, some truthful and others false.”
Meanwhile, in what seems to be a relief for the cartoonist, the Government has said that it will extend help to Aseem if it’s needed.
