What would happen if one fasts for a day? Okay, a two or three? Exhausted, exactly! However, just imagine the situation and condition of a person fasting not only for a day or two, even not a month or so but a decade, well, that’s when a picture of Iron Lady Irom Sharmila comes to one’s mind.
In an appeal to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Save Sharmila Solidarity Campaign (SSSC) has requested NHRC to send a delegation to support her cause thereby issuing an order to the Centre.
Being a nationwide campaign and protest against the suppression of Irom Sharmila, SSSC backs the Iron Lady of Manipur on democratic and humanitarian grounds. The campaign has been launched over a year ago demanding the government to hold positive talks with her. SSSC has been holding candle light rally, awareness programmes, and signature campaigns among others to gather support for Sharmila across the country.
Though NHRC has confirmed that they have got several letters on this issue, yet it can’t do much for the cause as Sharmila is demanding repeal on a law which is a very rigid issue, said NHRC sources.
It is to be noted that Irom Sharmila has been on hunger strike for 11 long years now. Sharmila is in judicial custody where she has been forcibly nose-feed. She has been demanding repeal of a draconian law Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from Manipur which gives liberty to the armed forces to kill anyone on a mere suspicion of he or she being a militant.
