On Teachers’ Day

Tuesday, 04 September 2012 17:29

“It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge,” said Albert Einstein.

Indeed, very true. Teachers are the pillars behind one’s creativity, knowledge and man-making. As a tribute to the contribution of teachers to the society, September 5 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day in India every year. It also marks the birthday of India’s second President Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, a great teacher, educator, diplomat, scholar, among others.

Back to history in 1962, once Dr Radhakrishnan was approached by his students to permit them to celebrate his birthday, he instead said that he would be obliged if September 5 is celebrated as Teachers’ Day. Since then, the day is observed as Teachers’ Day in every educational institute across India.

His love for the teaching profession is reflected throughout his lifetime. He was fully dedicated to the cause of education. Dr. Radhakrishnan was one of the most celebrated writers in the modern India. He has written on varied domains such as- philosophical, theological, ethical, educational, social and cultural subjects.

In contemporary times, Teachers' Day is celebrated as one of the many occasions in schools, colleges and universities every year on September 5. As a function, on this day, students present different cultural programmes, dance, music, drama et al for entertaining the teachers and also to seek their blessings. It is one of the functions that is looked forward to by both teachers and students. On this special day, students leave no stone unturned to make their teachers realise their importance in student’s life.
